Restoring Meadows, Rebuilding Habitats: Green Thumbs Volunteer Day
In August, Southern California Mountains Foundation’s Green Thumbs volunteers participated in an event at the Children’s Forest nursery in Running Springs for a day dedicated to meadow restoration. Together, volunteers, staff, and partners worked side by side to repair areas impacted by dozer lines used during the Line Fire, protecting both the nursery and fire station.
Hands-On Habitat Recovery
Over the course of the day, volunteers took action to help the meadow heal by:
- Re-grading disturbed areas to restore natural contours
- Improving drainage systems to prevent erosion
- Slowing stormwater runoff to protect recovering vegetation and soil
By carefully addressing damage caused by fire suppression efforts, our team is helping this important meadow ecosystem recover and thrive for future generations.
This restoration effort wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible collaboration between the U.S. Forest Service, our Climate Corps fellows, our passionate volunteers and staff. Their hard work highlights the power of community stewardship and the impact we can make when we come together to care for public lands.
A huge thank-you goes out to everyone who joined us for this Green Thumbs volunteer day. Whether you raked, graded, hauled, or planted, your contributions are making a real difference in the recovery of this vital habitat.
If you’d like to get involved in future Green Thumbs volunteer events or learn more about our conservation work, keep an eye on our events calendar – there are monthly opportunities to help protect and restore the beautiful landscapes of the San Bernardino National Forest.
