Summer Activities at the Big Bear Discovery Center

Southern California Mountains Foundation Announces Summer Season Activities at the Big Bear Discovery Center We are pleased to announce our 2017 summer activity schedule for the Big Bear Discovery Center.  “We have lots of fun activities going on all summer long here at the Big Bear Discovery Center.  All of our programs are designed for family fun and many of them are low cost or free,” says Wendy Craig, the manager of the Big Bear Discovery Center.   Activities include kayak and canoe eco-tours, campfire talks, nature walks, geocaching, map and compass classes, nature crafts, night hikes, bird house building, story time, gold panning, an adventure race, rocket building, and our famous Music in the Mountain series that will feature the best classic rock and country tribute shows available nationally with a six-show schedule.  Volunteer opportunities are also always available!  The Southern California Mountains Foundation’s mission to mobilize individuals to inspire and engage…

International Migratory Bird Day

International Migratory Bird Day at the Big Bear Discovery Center The Big Bear Discovery Center is celebrating Migratory Bird Day from 10am-2pm on Saturday, May 13, 2017. The Discovery Center will be holding several activities to celebrate our spring birds and educate visitors on conservation efforts to protect them.  Activities include birdhouse building, pinecone bird feeders, nature walks, bird walks, and Story Time. Enjoy bird decorations and art and find out what bird has the same wingspan as you! Migratory Bird Day also kicks off the annual Silent Auction. Bird themed art and photography are donated by local artists for this event as a fundraiser for the Southern California Mountains Foundation. Winter Trails Day 2017

Two feet of snow turned Big Bear into a winter wonderland last week, just in time for the 6th annual Winter Trails Day at the Big Bear Discovery Center on Saturday, January 14. Winter Trails Day is a national event dedicated to promoting winter sports such as snowshoeing and cross country skiing. Here in Big Bear, the event was a roaring success with around 1,500 members of the public attending – many from the local SoCal area, but also from as far afield as New England and Texas. The day was a mix of outdoor activities to take advantage of the fresh snow, and cozy indoor happenings fueled by hot cocoa and fresh coffee. Children enjoyed recyclable nature crafts and StoryTime with Discovery Center staff and volunteers, while adults and families alike could choose from a range of activities including snowshoeing, nature walks and good old-fashioned snowman building.
